Cory Calvin Pens Memoir “I Almost Became Me”

On a flight last May somewhere between Yangon, Myanmar, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, Cory Calvin was listening to a podcast about writing a book that reignited his lifelong goal to pen one. Just six months prior, Cory had built up enough courage to leave his successful corporate career and travel the globe. He had struggled to figure out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. But he knew continuing to climb the corporate ladder was not an option for him anymore.

Since Cory left his executive life in New York City a year and a half ago, he has traveled solo nonstop around the world visiting 44 countries and achieved his lifelong dream of visiting all seven continents when he stepped foot on Antarctica November 2017. And it was during these travels that helped Cory gain clarity with his life through writing.

Growing up in Montpelier, Ohio, a small, rural village in northwest Ohio, Cory experienced struggle at an early age. Realizing he was different than his peers, he creatively lied to protect his sexual identity. Bullied and teased for most of his childhood, Cory was confused why he was experiencing so much emotional pain.

Cory found a way to fight through the painful moments of his youth and landed an investment banking job on Wall Street after graduating from college. Over the next sixteen years, he worked his way up to the levels of corporate elite. But he continued to struggle to be his true self at the executive level. During this career journey, he knew in his gut that there was more than the 9-to-5 grind (or it was more like 9-to-7 grind).

On Monday, at a Village Council meeting in his hometown held at the Montpelier Police Department, Cory announced the title of the book he has been writing over the past 10 months. The symbolism of the announcement was significant to Cory since the Montpelier Police Department was his first employer and he later worked for the Village of Montpelier. It was a special evening to come back to his roots to announce this large accomplishment in his life.

During the presentation, Cory revealed the book’s title “I Almost Became Me: A Memoir”. At so many moments in his life, while he was living, breathing and going through the motions, Cory didn’t quite know who he was. He never felt like he was himself. The memoir walks through how everyone saw Cory as successful on the outside but he never felt that way on the inside. The book is about his journey to discover himself. To become him. And to discover his ultimate purpose in life.

Cory is dedicating his book to his mother, Melanie Sutter, who passed away earlier this year in February after a brief battle with brain cancer, and he wanted to honor her by launching his first book on Mother’s Day weekend.

At the book launch event, Cory will discuss more about his journey, read excerpts from the book, hold a special Mother’s Day dedication, and will sign paperback copies of his book that will be available for purchase. Cory will also be giving away free copies of his book at the event and fun photo booth opportunities are also planned. The book will be available on Amazon and Kindle beginning Tuesday, May 14, 2019.
