Local, northwest Ohio book reviewer, Tonya Heston, took the time to pre-read my #1 Best Selling memoir I Almost Became Me and wrote up an authentic review. I’m proud of Tonya for being able to share her own personal, relatable struggles here in rural northwest Ohio in her review.
With her permission, I have pulled out key parts from her review and included them below. CLICK HERE to read the full version of Tonya’s blog post.
“Cory’s memoir outlines his struggles growing up in a conservative (VERY conservative) Midwestern town in Ohio as a gay man.
“I connected with Cory when he spoke about how his parent’s handled his coming out. My story is a bit different than his in the fact that my dad has come to the conclusion that if I’m happy, he’s happy. I’m sorry that Cory’s dad hasn’t reached that same place.
“I celebrated with Cory when he met Craig and was being fulfilled – physically and emotionally. I audibly gasped out loud when I discovered Craig’s secret. I had to put my tablet down and take a few deep breaths. My heart broke for Cory.
“I’m happy for Cory in that he’s made it out alive. I made it out, but also made it back. Although I am “out” I cannot walk through WalMart holding Lindsey’s hand. We’ve been together for six years and still don’t kiss in front of my parents. I have to make sure that my daughter doesn’t get picked on for having two moms. It’s a blessing to have Lindsey in our lives, but being gay in a conservative mid-western town is hard.
To conclude: this is an excellent book. It’s authentic, emotional, and wonderful. You will be doing yourself a favor in reading this book. I read it in less than 24 hours. I simply couldn’t put it down.
Thank you Tonya Heston for the remarkable review.
