MONTPELIER, OHIO (May 22, 2019) — Self-published author, Cory Calvin, embarked on a journey to write his first book last July while traveling throughout Southeast Asia. After spending the previous 16 years as a corporate executive, he had finally built up enough courage to leave his high-pressure, professional career behind and began traveling the world nonstop living out his passion. And last week, Cory achieved his lifelong dream of publishing his book I Almost Became Me: A Memoir and watched his memoir quickly overtake the #1 Best Seller position as well as the #1 Hot New Release on Amazon in just two days.
It was only a year and a half ago when Cory was sitting in PepsiCo’s World Headquarters in New York as a longtime corporate executive tirelessly building strategic plans for one of the world’s leading food & beverage companies. He had climbed his way up the corporate ladder becoming a top-performing executive within the company. With each success, Cory always felt that he was so close to being who he should have been. That he had almost become himself.
“I had mastered spreadsheets and built financial models for most of my career. I wrote strategic documents for PepsiCo’s CEO and Board of Directors but never thought I was a good writer. In fact my manager would keep pressing me to finish the writing because I would constantly procrastinate,” Cory Calvin shared. “But it wasn’t until I wrote about content that I was passionate about when I realized that I had a talent. And taking care of my mother during her brave battle with brain cancer earlier this year allowed me to open up my heart and become vulnerable enough to share my emotional struggles. Emotions that I had locked away for decades.”
Cory led the entire writing and marketing process himself. He hired a book coach along with editors to help him craft his message. While the book is written for the LGBT+ genre, the numerous storylines of discovering personal identity, surviving unhealthy relationships, and coming out of any closet, not only the LGBT+ closet, have already resonated with a large number of readers.
With 35 five-star reviews, hear what other’s are saying about I Almost Became Me: A Memoir:
“I was captivated from the very first paragraph of chapter 1, The Devil Inside. The authors concise language of events yet descriptive prose of the setting propelled me to read with as little interruptions as possible. Cory’s life story confirms my belief in humankind to be resilient yet makes me sad that we have not evolved enough as a society to render his struggles in the same category of all coming of age stories.” — Karen N., Ohio
“An important addition to the LGBT+ genre, this book should be required reading for anyone who desires to have a deeper understanding of what it is like to discover their true identity despite the risk of not being accepted. Cory paints an authentic, sometimes dark, picture of this universal struggle, yet leaves the reader feeling empowered by his delicate optimism throughout. I hope this will inspire more stories from the LGBT+ community and help all people realize that they are not alone.” — Melissa B., Oklahoma
Cory’s 180-page book will be a great addition to your summer reading list as well as your next book club selection. Also, in addition to being a great book for the LGBT+ community, this book will be an excellent resource for family and friends to have a glimpse into the deep emotional struggles that LGBT+ people face.
